Start with a city view

Dede’s Instagram photograph from 17 April 2025 is tagged Luxembourg City Centre. Trees, a path and the city skyline set the mood for this guide: take time to look rather than collect as many stops as possible. The route below is an editorial suggestion for your own visit. Begin in the upper town and decide how much time and energy you have for a detour into the valley. If photography matters to you, leave gaps between sightseeing stops.

Old town and Corniche: get the bigger picture

The Luxembourg City Tourist Office recommends walks through the old town, along the Chemin de la Corniche and to viewpoints at the Bock overlooking the Grund. Use these places to organise one connected walk. Choose a starting point on the city map and stay on the upper level first. A broad view into the valley helps explain the city’s layout. Keep paths clear for others and put the camera away for part of the walk. These photographs illustrate the guide; they do not establish the order of Dede’s own outing.

Give the Grund its own stage

The Grund is a district below the upper town. Make it a second stage rather than repeatedly moving up and down. Choose a stretch beside the Alzette and leave time for a break. The tourist office identifies the public lift between the Grund and the Plateau du Saint-Esprit as a connection to the upper town. Check its operation and your precise route locally. Steps, slopes and cobblestones may matter when travelling with a pushchair or limited mobility. Shorten the walk if your return would otherwise feel rushed.

Bus, tram and train: what is free

Mobiliteit.lu states that public buses, trams and trains within Luxembourg are free; on trains this applies to second class. Check first-class travel and any cross-border part of your journey separately. Free domestic transport does not make a train journey from your home in Germany free. Look up the entire journey, including the final connection to the city centre and your return. Use Mobiliteit.lu for current departures and disruptions. Riding part of the way can leave more energy for the walk itself.

A break, the weather and a shorter version

Treat a meal as a proper pause rather than another compulsory stop. Compare menus locally and choose according to your budget and preferences; this guide does not recommend an unverified restaurant. With rain or limited time, an upper-town walk and one viewpoint can be enough. Save the Grund for another visit if needed. Download a map, check the weather and note a comfortable latest return time. Check opening hours and tickets separately for any indoor visits you add. The linked National Geographic overview offers further travel inspiration for the country.
