A trip to Cannstatter Wasen: getting there, Swabian food and festival tents

From Karlsruhe, Ulm and Freiburg to Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt: a plan for a future festival visit. The 2026 festival has ended; this guide helps you prepare for a later edition.

Choose the right destination

The festival grounds are on Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. The 2026 festival ran from 25 September to 11 October and has ended. This guide prepares for a future visit, not a currently open festival. Check new dates and special transport with the organiser before booking. Search for Bad Cannstatt station and compare the complete journey. Karlsruhe and Ulm are possible starting points; Freiburg is outside a 100-kilometre radius and is included as a more distant option.

From Karlsruhe by train

Direct long-distance trains connect Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof with Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof. Compare regional and long-distance options in the DB planner for your actual date. Consider the total time, fare and onward journey to Bad Cannstatt. Allow a comfortable transfer, particularly with a group. Today's services are not a promise for the next festival season. Save outward and return connections and check for changes before setting off.

From Ulm: plan the return too

Direct trains also run from Ulm Hauptbahnhof to Stuttgart. Compare faster long-distance services with regional options for your travel date. Decide when you want to reach the grounds, then find a complete connection to Bad Cannstatt. Save an earlier return option as well, giving you flexibility if you become tired or change plans. The train ride to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof is only part of the journey.

From Freiburg: allow more time

The journey from Freiburg im Breisgau is longer than from Karlsruhe or Ulm. Check direct and connecting services instead of assuming a particular route. Start early for a day trip. If you want a late evening in a festival tent, compare the last suitable return with an overnight stay in Stuttgart. Include local transport to Bad Cannstatt. The final stretch to the grounds

The organiser describes the signposted walk from Bad Cannstatt station as taking less than ten minutes. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee in crowds or with reduced mobility. Cannstatter Wasen and Mercedesstraße were also listed as light-rail access points for the 2026 edition. U11 is a festival service; check availability, operating hours and routing again for the next edition. Use the VVS planner on the day and follow the signs on site.

Discover Swabian food

The organiser's Wasen guide lists Göckele, Kässpätzle, Schupfnudeln and Maultaschen. Göckele is roast chicken. Sweet options include roasted almonds, waffles and crêpes. Vegetarian and vegan choices depend on the stall or tent, so check its menu. Our suggestion is a shared savoury meal followed by a walk around the grounds. Prices from an earlier edition do not automatically apply to your next visit.

Beer, traditional dress and tent atmosphere

Music, long tables, traditional clothing and serving staff shape the atmosphere. Servers in dirndls carrying several mugs are a familiar sight. Beer is traditionally served in one-litre Maß mugs. The beers and alcohol-free drinks available depend on the tent and its current menu. Include water and food breaks. Anyone drinking alcohol should arrange public transport or a sober driver for the journey home.

Reservations and a relaxed journey home

Groups should read their chosen tent's reservation conditions in advance. The operator explains time slots, vouchers and entry rules. The organiser warns that full tents may close to additional guests. Match arrival and departure to your reservation, agree on a meeting point and save your return connection. Leave enough time to walk to the station so the outing remains manageable at the end.
